The University of Maryland’s Office of Extended Studies offers many unique learning opportunities through various programs. You can choose the best program depending on your educational goals and personal schedules. Here, we’ll bring you into a deep exploration of major programs for extended studies. Given that many students have to choose online classes due to their busy schedules, several programs that offer online courses are introduced here.

1) Summer Term

Over 1,700 undergraduate and graduate courses and workshops are offered through this program. All classes can be taken online or in the morning/afternoon/evening. If you cannot attend classes to meet time requirements, online classes present you with the flexibility and convenience you need.

You can choose a 3-week session or a 6-week session that best fits your summer schedule. The Summer Term is specially designed for students who wish to get started & explore new interests or prepare for fall semester & catch up on credits. Students who want to get ahead and meet a major requirement can also enroll in the Summer Term.

Summer Term is offered for a wide range of students, including:

2) Winter Term

This is a three-week session in January. You can choose from more than 350 undergraduate and graduate courses that are offered online or in the three sessions of a day (morning, afternoon and evening). During the three-week period, you can catch up on credits, satisfy a major requirement or accelerate progress toward graduation.

Note: Current University of Maryland students only need to complete the online registration for both Summer Term and Winter Term. Visit MyUM and log in with your Directory ID and password. Then you can click on Academics & Testudo. Choose the term you want to register under the Registration Time & Blocks. Continue and select the course and section number. After completing your online registration, you can click “Sign Off” and go through the Payment Calculation Page. Once your payment is submitted, your whole registration will be completed.

3) Professional Programs

Are you interested in lifelong learning? This is the getaway to lifelong learning at the University of Maryland. The program consists of professional graduate degree programs, post-baccalaureate learning chances and customized courses & programs. Among its graduate degree programs, two online programs are available.

Master of Chemical and Life Sciences

The Master of Chemical and Life Sciences is an online, content-based professional masters program. It’s primarily designed for middle and high school science teachers. All courses of this master program will be delivered exclusively through distance education as online courses. To take classes online, students must ensure that their computer’s hardware and software are compatible.

Students must complete the online application for the Master of Chemical and Life Sciences. They will need to pay a non-refundable application fee of $75. Then a complete set of official transcripts should be submitted to the following address:

After you complete the required course, your diplomas will be mailed to the address posted on your student record. Before receiving your diploma, you must follow 4 steps for graduation.

• During the semester in which you plan to graduate, you must register for at least one credit.

• Visit MyUM and apply for graduation.

• You’re required to submit the Approved Program form.

• The last step is to submit the Certification of Master’s Degree without Thesis.

Graduate Certificate of Professional Studies in Violence, Torture and Trauma

Another online program is the Graduate Certificate of Professional Studies in Violence, Torture and Trauma. This is a 12-credit, four-course fully online program. It’s designed for counselors, family therapists, psychologists or social workers wishing to enhance their knowledge of serving survivors of torture and/or trauma. To enroll in this online program, students must have a master’s or doctoral degree in psychology, counseling, social work or other related fields from an accredited institution.

Upon successful completion of this online program, students will get a graduate certificate from the University of Maryland. Successful learners may earn Continuing Education Units from several institutes, like the American Psychological Association, the National Board of Certified Counselors and the National Association of Social Workers.
